Enough is Enough!

Okay, it really doesn't matter what your take on Obama is, this is just plain wrong.

I read with interest a blog from Brian McLaren - and then listened to a clip - about the latest Religious Right campaign against Obama. "Prayer for Obama. Psalm 109:8"

On the surface, it seems pretty good. That is, until you actually read the verse. And the verses following that one. Here is 109:8 if you don't happen to know it off the top of your head:

"May his days be few, may another take his place of leadership."

Well. okay. That seems pretty innocuous. That is, until you look at the context of the rest of the passage. Beginning with verse 9:

"May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow.
May his children be wandering beggars; may they be driven from their ruined homes.
May a creditor seize all he has; may strangers plunder the fruits of his labor.
May no one extend kindness to him or take pity on his fatherless children.
May his descendants be cut off, their names blotted out from the next generation.
May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD; may the sin of his mother never be blotted out.
May their sins always remain before the LORD, that he may blot out their name from the earth."

This implies more than just wanting him out of office.

There is a danger in prooftexting the Bible for personal and/or political gain. This was a Scripture that was actually applied to the one who betrayed the Messiah. That carries a whole different level of implication when you apply it to the current administration, doesn't it?

I'm going out on a limb for a minute here... I don't think God likes it when we try to force His hand by twisting Scripture around. I don't think God approves when we misuse various passages against someone we just don't like. And I don't really think God likes this current "prayer" campaign. I'm pretty sure he doesn't find a whole lot of humor in something like this.

http://postchristianblog.com/ has a video clip talking about this if you want to hear more. Frankly, I'm appalled.

"Jesus called. He wants his religion back."
